Content, ideas, and tips I’m into right now

September’s in the rearview mirror already. Here’s my round-up of clips, inspo, and tech tips. Featuring: Google Gemini, iOS18, my appearance on FinServ Podcast, attention / creativity through hiking and 10k steps a day, and a few podcast editing helpers. Make sure you’re subscribed to my free email list to get these updates in your inbox.

Also, it’s college football season. GO BLUE!

Austin’s Michigan alumni bar Haymaker, me with attorney Kelsey Gordon last week.

On a sad note re: my alma mater: Greg Harden, who counseled countless people at the University of Michigan, including Tom Brady, Michael Phelps, Desmond Howard and J.J. McCarthy, passed away this month. He was 75.

During his time at Michigan, Harden became known in many circles as the school’s “Secret Weapon” for his work behind the scenes helping Wolverine athletes achieve peak performance. The late Bo Schembechler, a College Football Hall of Fame coach, hired Harden in 1986 as a staff consultant and student-athlete personal development program counselor.

I had the privilege to meet Greg in 2023 while producing a client’s podcast (see case study). Here’s the episode.

Still frame- me recording bonus footage of Greg Harden for a client podcast. Greg was wonderful, ebullient, had infectious joy, was a seer.

Michigan was lucky to have Greg. Just read the comments on his obit: Greg Harden, Man Who Positively Touched So Many Lives, Passes Away:

I’m so sad to hear the news of Greg’s passing. I’m heartbroken as he was a dear friend and mentor. There are so many beautiful qualities Greg had that endeared him to so many people over his years at Michigan. He meant the world to me and I could never have had the success I had without the time, energy, love and support he had given me. He will be truly missed.
– Tom Brady, Michigan Football (1995-99); 7-Time Super Bowl Champion

On to the list…

1) AI Note-Taking: A Game-Changer (Gemini + Voice)

Ever wish you could just talk your notes after a call? Now you can. My latest mini-podcast reveals how to use Google Gemini (gemini.google.com/app) for effortless, voice-based note-taking. With less cognitive load. It’s saving me hours each week. This hands-free method takes about 2 minutes — and you don’t have to type.

2) iOS 18 Feature: Make Ads Disappear (Like Magic)

iOS 18.0 is here, and it lets you banish those pesky ads in Safari. This is one of my favorite features of the update. Reclaim your browsing peace.

  • Bonus tip: cooked.wiki makes recipes easier to read
    • What a cheat code for the kitchen. If you’re trying to view a recipe and it’s covered with ads and pop-ups like most recipe blogs which are a UX (user experience) dumpster fire, just add cooked.wiki to the beginning of the URL. Example: see my favorite go-to salad recipe that Jennifer Aniston ate daily on the set of Friends:
      • Original URL: https://www.eatingbirdfood.com/jennifer-aniston-salad/
      • Cooked.wiki version: cooked.wiki/eatingbirdfood.com/jennifer-aniston-salad/ – 50x easier to read

3) My Guest Appearance on The FinServ Podcast with Jamie Hopkins

I was recently a guest on the FinServ Podcast (episode 19), where I shared my biggest negotiation wins and tips from my 15-year career, including the one move that doubled my salary. Jamie Hopkins had some incredibly kind things to say about me and my work (thanks my friend!). Follow Jamie on LinkedIn.

It felt good to contribute to this show primarily because the FinServ Foundation helps young people and recent college grads entering the workforce. I’m the opposite of a gatekeeper, I want everyone, especially young women, to know what I didn’t. I want us to get comfortable talking about actual dollar figures more often. Mentors are okay, sponsors are better.

More on this re: young women and money: financial advice at 9:02 in my Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders video, with over 72k views on TikTok).

It’s always smart and rewarding to support the next generation. Check out the episode:

4) Your Attention: The Most Valuable Currency (Plus 10k Steps & hiking APP)

My thoughts on the harnessing attention have been cementing, especially after recent changes in my life and my businesses. Attention is about more than just productivity – it’s about nurturing your creativity and well-being.

The best thing you can do for your mind is to move your body. The mind-body connection is everything. Your brain partially lives in your gut. Just 15 minutes of walking increases creativity, lifts mood, and elevates metabolism.

Although I was working out in the gym 4-5 days a week, I was averaging only 5-6k steps a day all of 2024. On 9/1/24 I committed to get at least 10k steps a day. I beat my goal. 10k is truly the bare minimum for the human body. Less is technically inactive. Changing small habits helps and adds up. E.g. you could simply modify one habit: whenever you scroll your phone or talk on the phone, you pace instead of sit.

More Michigan football, more movement, more of what made me happy in my past. I’ve taken up hiking again. It feels SO GOOD.

App recommendation: I love the AllTrails app for hiking. After a 7-day free trial it’s $35.99/year and well worth it. You can find nearby trails, read the latest reviews, and download trail maps to your phone. The more I move the more I get ideas. It really puts everything you consume into that tumbler so the rocks come out polished. Walking is a meditation.

Saw this clip from my girl Whitney and wanted to share with you. It relates to attention and inputs about which I’m getting increasingly, unapologetically picky:

“Your body is made up of all of the things that you put inside of your mouth. Your mind is made up of all of the things that you put into your ears and your eyes…” -Chris Williamson

Remember, where your attention goes, energy flows. Choose wisely!

5) Podcasting Tips & Tools

  • Tip: Export your podcast audio at -16 LUFS for optimal loudness across platforms.
  • Tool: Descript is my go-to for editing audio and video like a Word doc. Plus, its AI features are SO helpful. E.g. Underlord will shorten word gaps, cut filler words, and draft show notes and titles for you.
